Welcome
Welcome to website for the 15th Biennial Challenger Conference for Marine Sciences. The meeting will be held at the University of East Anglia in Norwich on 3-6 September 2012.
The Challenger Society for Marine Science is the premier learned society for marine scientists in the UK, with 350-500 members. Its objectives include the advancement of the study and application of marine science through research and education, and the encouragement of public debate and government policy on the development of marine science. To contribute to achieving its objectives, the Society organises a 4 day biennial conference covering all aspects of marine science.
The biennial conferences have a reputation for showcasing cutting edge marine science and technology, for promoting the next generation of marine scientists, and for creating a strong network of UK scientists and technologists.
The 2012 conference will be no exception, with 100 talks, 150 posters, a contentious debate, public lecture, ice breaker session and conference dinner. We hope you will join us in Norwich to make the 15th Biennial Challenger Conference the best yet.
Norwich is in the east of England and is the largest city in the region known as East Anglia. It was a very prosperous city in the medieval times, mainly because of the wool trade, and boasts a large number of churches and a cathedral dating from this period. Remnants of the city walls, the medieval street pattern of lanes and alleys, a few buildings and Norwich Castle can still be seen. In total contrast our newest public building in the heart of Norwich, The Forum, has a giant glass facade.
The major roads radiate out of Norwich a bit like the spokes of a wheel and the campus of the University of East Anglia is located on the outskirts of the city about 4 miles west of the city centre (15 minutes by bus). The University was established in the 1960s and is noted for its modern architecture – some of the buildings were designed by famous architects such as Lord Norman Foster and Sir Denys Lasdun. The campus is compact and set in parkland along the River Yare. You can visit the The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, an important regional gallery which was designed by Lord Foster, and which houses the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection. You might also want to take advantage of the Sportspark, one of the largest sports complexes in the country which includes a 50m swimming pool and a climbing wall.
